Noémie Lafrance, Site-Specific Choreographer

You won't see this choreographer's work in a theater; instead you'll find yourself in the stairwell of a building, in a parking garage, or at an abandoned public pool. Her productions aren't just outside concerts; they might overwhelm anyone for their extreme scale. Am I the only one to wonder what kind of person could generate such large and amazing ideas? This issue, The Arts Cure interviewed Noémie Lafrance, a quickly rising new choreographer based in New York.

SHARON GERSTEIN LUCKMAN
Executive Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

If I were asked to name the most successful dance company, in business terms, in New York City right now, I would have to say Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT); the new glass-covered building the company opened this year speaks to their financial strength. The Executive Director who has led this company for the last decade is Sharon Gersten Luckman, a woman from the dance world. The Arts Cure interviewed Luckman\a fruitful opportunity to learn for myself, as the owner of a small nonprofit organization who must work constantly and hectically to survive.

Ralph Samuelson
Executive Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

In New Yorkfs melting pot of races, a few foundations enthusiastically support Asians. The Asian Cultural Council (ACC) is one of these. Since its inception, the council, founded by a member of the prestigious Rockefeller family, has supported many artists from Japan and elsewhere in Asia. Recently The Arts Cure interviewed Mr. Ralph Samuelson, the ACCfs current director, a man whose soft-spoken, mild personality has a calming effect upon others.

Career Transition For Dancers
That's Entertainment!

As the world recovers from the recent rampage of natural disasters, there is a tendency for the public to overlook the significance of funding the arts. Career Transition for Dancers (CTFD) is an organization dedicated to providing educational scholarships, advocacy, training, and various other resources to dancers who are no longer able to perform for a living. This year CTFDfs annual benefit, gThatfs Entertainment,h was hosted by a vivacious Liza Minnelli at City Center on October 24. By paying homage to dance as entertainment, gThatfs Entertainmenth proved that dance is a true celebration of life and is important to the vibrant vitality of our culture.
