Gen Horiuchi
Saint Louis Ballet, Artistic Director

A ballet dancer stands on stage for only a short time in his or her life. That moment that the dancer stands on stage represents a brief flowering. When it is over, an artist finds himself or herself facing a severe reality and a new challenge.

Gen Horiuchi, the artistic director of Saint Louis Ballet (SLB), was born to parents who owned a well-known ballet company in Japan. Expectations were therefore high for the futures of Gen and his twin brother, Ju Horiuchi, from a young age. The twin brothers eventually went separate ways; Gen came to the United States, while Ju and their sister succeeded to their parents' company. Gen accepted his current position with SLB in Missouri after a career dancing with New York City Ballet. Gen Horiuchi is probably the first Japanese artistic director to take over and run an existing American ballet company. We asked Mr. Horiuchi to talk about his experiences dealing with business as an artist.
