Amon Miyamoto、Director

Japanese Theater was part of the Lincoln Center Festival this year for the first time. It was "Pacific Overtures," directed by Amon Miyamoto, produced by the New National Theater, Tokyo. The musical, was a rare production with a theme about Japan, which was originally created by Americans and performed on Broadway. When it premiered in 1976 the show won a Tony award for the stage scenery, but it was short life.At that point who would have thought the Japanese would revive it in Japan a quartercentury later, and then would bring it to New York, the genuine land of the musical? And Miyamoto's version of the "Pacific Overture" was so successful as to be celebrated with standing ovations every night. This month we bring you the voice of Amon Miyamoto, the director of the show. The interview was quite an irregular one, being held in the cafe in the lobby of Avery Fischer Hall, with many audience members wanting to talk to him and stop him from talking to me.
