Akaji Maro
Dairakudakan

Dairakudakan, a Japanese butoh group that has been highly acclaimed in New York City recently, is a company with a thirty-year history. Artistic director Akaji Maro is a member of Butohs first generation, dancers who directly interacted with Butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata, and Maro has since established his own style. Responding to my request for an interview last summer while visiting NYC for the companys second season at the Japan Society, Maro appeared in a summer kimono; his appearance seemed strangely suited to the United Nations building that loomed behind him.
