Dance for Special Children

The Arts Cure Center is pleased to announce that we will have a workshop for special children who have problems such as autism, ADHD, etc. This is not a program that hospitals may give for therapeutic purposes, but a dance class that explores the possibilities that children with such problems might have while playing. We currently have openings for children age six to twelve. If we find a large difference in the ages of applicants, we may increase the number of classes to be able to group students by age. We will keep each class very small: from three to five students. While allowing the students to move with music, riding on the rhythm, we will encourage them to express their inner selves.

Term: Saturdays, Aug. 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.

Time: 11:00 am to noon

Number of students in each class: Three to five.

Tuition: $100/Student.

Application Deadline: Aug. 1, 2011. (Applications may be closed as soon as the space is filled.)

Purpose of the Workshop
To have your children move, to dance to music, and to have fun.

Outline of the Class

Music
Musicals, pop-music, electronic music, etc.

Practice Ware
Please have your child wear loose clothes that are easy to move in.

Satomi Makida Satomi Makida,
Instructor

Satomi Makida is from Tokyo, Japan. In Japan she danced professionally with Toho Entertainment Group, Kola Hirayama (Dance Station Express), Mieko Yoshida and Eiko Asakawa. She has also performed in productions of “West Side Story” and “Miss Saigon” and with various modern dance companies here in the United States. Ms. Makida studied Bob Fosse repertory under Diane Laurenson and jazz and theater dance with Richard Pierlon and Randy Skinner. In her theater jazz class, Satomi starts her class with a basic ballet and yoga warm-up and builds to dance combinations that include Fosse-style, jazz, and lyrical dance forms. Satomi also has long had a strong interest in teaching dance to children who are differently- abled, either physically or mentally. When she was young, her grandparents taught sewing to differently- abled children, and Satomi has long wished to use her profession to work with such youngsters. She expects that she and her students will have fun together!
